English Translation: Fruit of Thy Womb
This is a pre-cast commission that is almost complete. It can be purchased as a maquette, or of greater size (of which it was intended).
This sculpture has deep personal meaning for me. It reflects the impact of mental illness and homelessness on our world today. This piece is to be viewed from the dark hopelessness of the characters depicted in the base, drawing the viewer upward towards the Blessed Mother and the promise of our Savior to come.
Both of the suffering characters are based on real people who I have bared witness to in my life. The story of their unfortunate torment and despair begins by following a thorn ridden vine, which is evoked by a slight touch from the boney finger of death. Filled with rich and historical Catholic symbolism, viewers will find something new each time they look upon it.
I have admired for my entire life, the work of the masters from the early Greek and Renaissance to the Baroque. And even as a child, knew that their hands must have been touched by God, in order to create such works. Inspired by those periods, and the masters who set the bar, I feel that it is my job as a Sculptor, to stand on their great shoulders and continue where they left off. So much of the liturgical art that we see today is simply another artist's rendition of the same exact sculptures done hundreds of years ago.
My work is not based on ideas and compositions of past artists, but ideas and compositions that are born of my own heart, mind, and observations. I want my liturgical work to reflect religion in our contemporary world, so that children and those in need of direction will be able to connect with the subject matter that stands before them.
The interested party will cover the molding and casting cost, and receive the first of 10 casts. As for the remaining 9 casts, 20% of all proceeds will be donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Please contact me if you are interested in the commencement of this project.
